What is the 3D-Secure Service?

​

The 3D-Secure technology provides additional security for online transactions made using your credit card.

​

3D-Secure enhances the security of your card for online payments by requesting an additional transaction verification using a unique transaction number (TAN). The purpose of this procedure is to prevent the unauthorised use of your card by third parties on the Internet.

It is important to note that: for Mastercard, this procedure is called 3D Secure Mastercard Identity Check (formerly known as Mastercard® SecureCode™); for VISA — Visa Secure (formerly known as Verified by Visa); and for American Express — SafeKey.

Why is the 3D-Secure Procedure Used?

​

European legislators require banks to provide stronger protection for online payments made with credit cards. The identity of the cardholder must be verified in accordance with established security requirements.

​

This requirement is known as the 3D-Secure procedure — a method of identification using a TAN application or SMS. All European online merchants are obliged to use this secure payment procedure.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) requires unique customer authentication that includes at least two of the following elements:

• Knowledge
  PIN code, password, or other security questions, the answers to which are known only to the customer.

• Possession
  Mobile phone, passwords, or other data exclusively controlled by the customer.

• Inherence (Authentication)
  Fingerprints or any biometric data or characteristics that allow identification of the customer.
